Aujourd'hui le Pape s'est envolé pour ChypreLa journée d'aujourd'hui s'est déroulée un peu comme celle d'hier : lecture et discussions le matin, votes pour les deux autres Assistants l'après-midi. Il y a d'abord eu un vote consultatif sur la question suivante : " Acceptons-nous la présence du Provincial d'Europe, Detlef Barch, du 9 au 12 juin, comme observateur au Chapitre ? " C'est dans la joie de revoir Detlef en meilleure santé que les capitulants ont voté " Oui " à l'unanimité. Detlef, tu peux donc faire le voyage à Rome !
Les capitulants ont ensuite écouté et critiqué la 1ère ébauche du texte sur notre mission en dehors de l'Afrique. Après une bonne discussion, les capitulants ont demandé de réécrire le texte plus positivement parce que plusieurs ne le trouvaient pas assez entraînant et le considéraient sans conviction.
Il y a eu ensuite lecture et critique d'une première ébauche du texte sur la formation initiale écrit en 9 chapitres. En voici la teneur : Le programme de notre formation a évolué et s'est amélioré au fil des années. L'objectif principal est la formation de missionnaires selon le charisme de la Société. Le Chapitre invite à investir davantage de ressources humaines et matérielles dans l'animation missionnaire t vocationnelle. Les Provinciaux veillent à l'organisation des centres de formation de première étape. Pour cela, ils doivent prévoir à temps la préparation et la nomination de nouveaux formateurs. Si nous voulons garantir une formation de qualité à l'Année spirituelle, il faut prévoir une moyenne de 24 candidats par centre. Il faut déjà penser à ouvrir un troisième centre pour l'Année spirituelle. Le Secrétaire à la formation initiale étudiera et explorera les possibilités de modalités alternatives pour le stage apostolique. Il continuera aussi à élaborer les programmes de formation humaine intégrale qui s'étendront sur les 4 étapes de la formation initiale.
Les efforts pour intégrer JPIC et Rencontre et Dialogue dans la formation initiale sont à maintenir et à développer. Les formateurs de nos centres veilleront à ce que les critères de discernement vocationnel soient dûment appliqués, etc.
Les capitulants ont aussi échangé sur les bienfaits et inconvénients (peu à vrai dire) des Petits Centres de Formation au niveau de la 4e étape. Ces centres aident les étudiants à développer un esprit familial.
Que le Chapitre mette dans ses Actes un court texte en faveur du PISAI.
Dans l'après-midi, ont été élus Assistants généraux d'abord Emmanuel Ngona, Congolais de 50 ans, Provincial de la PAC, et Peter Welsh, Britannique de 43 ans, délégué élu de la Province d'Europe.

Demain, samedi, sorties soit à Assise ou bien à Orvieto, ville fortifiée étrusque qui fut annexée par les États pontificaux à la moitié du XVe siècle. Les papes choisirent la ville pour y séjourner de temps en temps, quand ils n'étaient pas à Rome. On y retrouve une magnifique cathédrale qui abrite le corporal de Bolsena lié à l'institution de la Fête Dieu.

Today Papal's Visit to ChyprusToday unfolded a little like yesterday: reading and discussion in the morning, voting for the two other Assistants in the afternoon. There was an initial consultative vote on the following question: 'Do we agree to the presence of Detlef Barch, the Provincial of Europe, as observer to the Chapter from the 9th till the 12th June?' Cheered to see Detlef in improved health, the Capitulants voted unanimously in favour. Detlef can therefore make his trip to Rome!
The Capitulants then listened to and made the critique of the first version of the text on Our Mission outside Africa. After a thorough discussion, the Capitulants requested a more positive rewriting of the text as several among them did not find the text lively enough and found it lacked conviction.
Then there was the reading and critique of the first draft of the text on Initial Formation, containing 9 chapters. This is the gist of it: Our Formation programme has evolved and improved down the years. The main objective is the formation of missionaries according to the charism of the Society. The Chapter encourages greater investment of human and material resources in Missionary and Vocation Promotion. The Provincials see to the organisation of First Phase Formation Centres. For this, they need to foresee a time of preparation in the appointment of new staff members. If we wish to guarantee a high standard of formation in the Spiritual Year, we need to foresee an average of 24 candidates per Centre. We need to think already of opening a third centre for the Spiritual Year. The Secretary to Initial Formation will investigate and explore possibilities of alternative modalities for the apostolic practice period. He will also continue to elaborate programmes of Integral Human Formation which will extend to the 4 Phases of Initial Formation.
Efforts to integrate JPIC and Encounter and Dialogue in Initial formation are to be maintained and developed. Formation staff members in our Centres will see to it that criteria of vocation discernment are duly applied, etc.
Capitulants also discussed the benefits and disadvantages (few, if the truth be told) of Small Formation Centres of Formation at the level of the 4th Phase. These Centres help students to develop a family spirit.
The Chapter should include a short text in favour of PISAI in its Acts.
In the afternoon, there were the elections for the Assistants General. Firstly, Emmanuel Ngona, Congolese, 50, Provincial of PAC was elected and then Peter Welsh, British, 43, Delegate Superior of Great Britain, and elected delegate of the European Province.
Tomorrow, Saturday, there are outings to either Assisi or Orvieto, an Etruscan fortified town that was annexed by the Papal States in the mid-fifteenth century. The Popes chose the town to reside in from time to time, when they were not at Rome. There is a magnificent cathedral which shelters the Bolsena Corporal, linked to the institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi.
