Chers frères et sœurs,

Vous avez probablement entendu que le Père Gian-Battista Maffi est décédé. En attendant que la police puisse éclairer tous les détails, voici quelques précisions.
A 14h05 il y a eu une explosion à l'IBLA. Je suis descendu de ma chambre en cherchant l'origine de l'explosion. Vers 14h15, je suis rentré dans la bibliothèque avec un extincteur. En arrivant, au milieu des flammes j'ai trouvé le corps de Gian-Battista allongé et inerte par terre. Après avoir vidé l'extincteur, nous avons voulu avec John MacWilliam essayer de sortir le corps. C'était impossible à cause de la fumée.

C'est TRES dur pour les confrères de l'IBLA, dur pour les pères blancs et pour le diocèse, plus dur encore pour la famille de Gian-Battista. Sa maman a 87 ans…

Demain matin je retournerai encore aux bureaux de la police pour répondre aux questions... Il faut souligner le rôle professionnel de tous les intervenants qui avec compétence et humanité ont fait leur travail et nous ont soutenus: la police et les pompiers sont restés avec quelques confrères toute la nuit à l'IBLA, les Sœurs Blanches nous ont entourés de soins et de sollicitude, les voisins se sont montrés extrêmement généreux, les amis des pères et les connaisseurs de l'IBLA ont défilé le jour même.

60% de la Bibliothèque a été brulé par les flammes ou endommagé par l'eau.

Il nous faudra attendre que les enquêteurs aient fini leur travail avant de pouvoir établir la date des funérailles. Elle vous sera alors communiquée. Dès maintenant deux frères de Gian-Battista s'annoncent pour vendredi. Mgr. Maroun est au courant, et il a raccourci son séjour à Amman. Il sera de retour vendredi.

En attendant nous allons tous nous unir dans la prière à Gian-Battista, à sa maman, à sa famille, et au diocèse.

Dear brothers and sisters,

You have probably already heard that Father Gian-Battista Maffi has died. While waiting for the police to make all the details clear, here are some particulars.

At 14.05, there was an explosion at the IBLA. I left my room to find the source of the blast. Around 14.15, I went into the library with a fire extinguisher. On entering, in the middle of the blaze, I discovered the lifeless body of Gian-Battista lying on the floor. After emptying the extinguisher, John MacWilliam and I tried to bring out the body. It was impossible to do so, on account of the smoke.

It is extremely hard on the confreres of the IBLA, hard also for the White Fathers and the diocese, but hardest of all on the family of Gian-Battista. His mother is 87.

Tomorrow morning, I will return once again to the Police Office to reply to their questions. We need to emphasise the professional conduct of all those concerned, who with competence and humanity carried out their work and supported us: police and firemen stayed with some confreres the whole night at IBLA, the White Sisters surrounded us with care and concern, the neighbours proved extremely generous, the friends of the Fathers and acquaintances of the IBLA came to bring their condolences the same day.

We need to wait until the investigators have finished their work before being able to make a date for the funeral. We will then inform you. Even now, two of Gian-Battista's brothers have sent word of their arrival for Friday. Bishop Maroun has been informed and is cutting short his stay at Amman. He will be back on Friday.

In the meantime, we all join in prayer for Gian-Battista, for his mother, his family and the diocese.
