VISITE DE SOLIDARITE DES LEADERS RELIGIEUX AFRICAINS EN EN COTE D'IVOIRE

Des instituions religieuses, après plusieurs consultations sur la situation en Côte d'Ivoire et ayant pris en considération leur rôle prophétique d'une part et en réponse aux différents appels lancés, d'autre part, par la communauté internationale sur le fait selon lequel, la crise ivoirienne est un défi pour l'Afrique, ont décidé d'une visite dans ce pays du 17 au 19 Février 2011.
Les institutions religieuses africaines se composent du Symposium des Conférences Episcopales d'Afrique et Madagascar (SCEAM), du Conseil des Eglises de Toute l'Afrique (CETA) et du Conseil Africain des Leaders Religieux (CARL). La délégation des Leaders Religieux Africains en Cote d'Ivoire était conduite par son Eminence Théodore Adrien Cardinal SARR, 1er Vice Président du SCEAM et Archevêque de Dakar, Sénégal.

La visite avait pour objectif :
- d'exprimer la solidarité pastorale des Leaders Religieux au peuple et à la Conférence Episcopale de Côte d'Ivoire;
- de rencontrer les leaders religieux et autres acteurs sociopolitiques en Côte d'Ivoire afin de s'informer de l'état de la situation, et des attentes respectives pour une sortie de crise;
- de rencontrer dans l'esprit de famille de Dieu les deux protagonistes Mr. Laurent Gbagbo et Mr. Alassane Ouattara pour les écouter en vue de proposer leur contribution dans la recherche d'une solution à la crise politique en Côte d'Ivoire.

Au cours de cette visite, la délégation a eu de fructueuses discussions avec les deux protagonistes Mr. Laurent Gbagbo et Mr. Alassane Ouattara, La Majorité Présidentielle (LMP), le Conseil Constitutionnel (CC), le Forum National des Confessions Religieuses (FNCR) et la Conférence Episcopale de Cote d'Ivoire (CECI).

A la fin de cette visite, la délégation fait, entre autres, les observations suivantes :
1- L'élection présidentielle en Cote d'Ivoire avait pour but de mettre fin à la crise mais elle a conduit à une impasse;
2- La question de la Certification a été diversement comprise par chaque camp.

Au regard, de ces observations, la délégation fait les recommandations suivantes :

a. Qu'une plateforme soit crée par les Leaders Politiques et Religieux Africains pour un dialogue sincère et réel entre Mr. Alassane Ouattara et Mr. Laurent Gbagbo pour trouver une solution pacifique à la crise politique. Ils doivent se rappeler ce que disait le Président Barack Obama au cours de sa visite au Ghana en 2009, que ''les africains doivent assumer pleinement leur responsabilité pour leur avenir'' ;
b. Que la Conférence Episcopale de Côte d'Ivoire et toutes autres institutions religieuses poursuivent leur rôle prophétique dans la médiation ;
c. Que le peuple de Côte d'Ivoire ne se laisse pas emporté par les divergences politiques qui pourraient constituer un handicap majeur à la cohésion sociale. . Les croyants à sont invités à redoubler d'effort dans la prière et ne jamais laisser la politique partisane corrompre leur foi ;
d. Que l'ONU, l'UA, la CEDEAO et toutes autres institutions internationales fassent tout ce qui est possible dans les limites de leur mandat pour contribuer à une résolution pacifique de la crise en Côte d' Ivoire.

Les leaders religieux africains réaffirment leur engagement à continuer la collaboration avec leurs homologues en Côte d'Ivoire pour une solution paisible et durable à la crise.
La délégation était composée en autres membres de Mgr John ONAIYEKAN, Archevêque d'Abuja, Nigeria et Co-président du Conseil des Leaders Religieux Africains (CLRA) et du SHEIKH RAHMAN AHMAD ABDUR, représentant le Sultan de Sokoto qui est aussi membre du CLRA.

En conclusion, la Délégation exprime sa profonde gratitude à la Conférence Episcopale de Côte d'Ivoire (CECI) et à son Président Mgr. Joseph Ake Yapo ; et la Conférence Episcopale Régionale de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (CERAO) pour leurs diverses contributions à la réussite de cette mission ; au Nonce Apostolique en Cote d'Ivoire Mgr. Ambrose Madtha pour son accompagnement spirituel. La délégation se réjouis de la disponibilité et de l'esprit d'écoute des responsables des diverses institutions et structures rencontrées ; en l'occurrence Mr. Laurent Gbagbo et Mr. Alassane Ouattara pour leur disponibilité exceptionnelle.

Le SCEAM voudrait saisir cette opportunité pour exprimer sa reconnaissance et ses remerciements à ses partenaires : MISEREOR (Allemagne) et le Catholic Relief Service (CRS), USA pour leurs diverses contributions pour le succès de cette visite.
Notons que cette visite s'est achevée par une Célébration Eucharistique concélébrée à la Paroisse St Jean de Cocody, Abidjan.

AFRICAN RELIGIOUS LEADERS PAY SOLIDARITY VISIT TO COTE D' IVOIRE

Some African religious leaders after several consultations on the crisis in Côte d'Ivoire and taking into account their prophetic role and the call made by the International Community that the Ivorian crisis is an African issue and that it is the responsibility of African leaders to solve the political crisis of Côte d'Ivoire recently (17-19 February 2011) sent a delegation on a solidarity visit to that country.

The African Religious Bodies comprises the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), the All African Council of Churches (AACC) and the African Council of Religious Leaders (ACRL). The delegation to Côte d' was led by His Eminence Th´´odore Adrien SARR, Vice President of SECAM and Archbishop of Dakar Senegal.

The visit had the following objectives:
- To express the solidarity of the religious leaders to the people of Cote d'Ivoire;
- To meet with religious leaders and others - sociopolitical officials in order to clearly understand the state of affairs in Cote d'Ivoire and their expectations towards the resolution of the crisis facing them;
- To meet with the two political protagonists, Mr. Alassane Ouattara and Mr. Laurent Gbagbo, in order to find a solution to the crisis in Cote d'Ivoire.

During this visit, the delegation had fruitful discussions with Mr. Gbagbo and Mr. Ouattara, two representatives of the Ruling Party (LMP), the Constitutional Council (CC), the National Forum of Religious Bodies (FNCR), and the Episcopal Conference of Cote d'Ivoire (CECI).

Following this visit, the delegation made among others the followings observations:

1- That the presidential election was meant to bring to an end the crisis, but instead resulted in an impasse;
2- That the issue of Certification of the electoral process and results has been understood differently by the two parties.

Following an evaluation after meetings with the parties concerned, the delegation came up with some recommendations as stated below:

a. That a platform be created by African political and religious leaders for sincere and frank dialogue between Mr. Ouattara and Mr. Gbagbo in order to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the political crisis. They must bear in mind the emphasis made by President Barrack Obama during his visit to Ghana in 2009, that "Africans must take responsibility for their future".
b. That the Episcopal Conference of Côte d'Ivoire and other religious bodies continue to play their prophetic role in the mediation process;
c. That the people of Côte d'Ivoire be impressed upon not to allow themselves to be manipulated by the political differences that would undermine the social cohesion; and appealed to all believers to redouble their efforts in prayers and never let partisan politics affect their faith;
d. That the UN, AU, ECOWAS and other international bodies should try as much as possible, within the limit of their mandate, to contribute to a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Côte d'Ivoire.

The religious leaders re-affirmed their commitment to continue collaborating with their partners in Cote d'Ivoire with the hope to finding a peaceful, and lasting solution to this unfortunate situation.

Other members of the delegation included Most Rev. John ONAIYEKAN, Archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria and Co-Chair of ACRL and SHEIKH Rahman AHMAD ABDUR, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto and a member of the ACRL.

In conclusion, the delegation expressed its profound gratitude to the Episcopal Conference of Cote d'Ivoire and its President, Archbishop Joseph Ake´ Yapo ; and the Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA) for their diverse contributions in connection with the visit ; to the Apostolic Nuncio in Côte d'Ivoire Archbishop Ambrose Madtha for his spiritual guidance. The delegation was also very grateful to the various officials and institutions in Abidjan and especially to Mr. Gbagbo and Mr. Ouattara for having received them.

The visit was concluded by a Eucharistic Celebration at St Jean Parish in Cocody, Abidjan.
SECAM took the opportunity to express its appreciation and thanks to its Partner Agencies like MISEREOR, Germany and Catholic Relief Service (CRS), USA for their various contributions towards the success of the visit.
